How to Choose Your Healing Team

Four questions worth asking before you hand your health to anyone.

Have you ever googled your symptoms? Asked AI about them?

More than likely, the answer is yes.

Have you done it at 3:00 in the morning? Many of us have.

Searching in the dark is its own kind of suffering. Health anxiety keeps a lot of good people awake, and it rarely arrives alone. Whatever symptoms brought you to the search bar are probably bringing pain, discomfort, and a general sense of dis-ease along with them. Sound familiar? If so, you're not alone.

We're trained to outsource our knowing

From a young age, most of us learn to look outside ourselves for answers. To find someone, or something, that will tell us what's wrong.

This isn't always a problem. We need our doctors. We need our experts. We need people with real experience who can point toward relief.

The deeper problem is the feedback loop. Getting information from you to your provider, and back again, is harder than it should be. Sometimes there isn't a loop at all.

Have you ever left an appointment with more questions than you walked in with, and no clear way to follow up? Short answers. Short visits. One specialist in one building, and the next specialist across town, and no one comparing notes.

Regardless of the path you've walked, Western, holistic, or some winding combination of both, there have probably been twists and turns along the way. That's exactly what makes the feedback loop between you and your practitioners so important. Staying as healthy as possible, and deepening a lasting sense of wellbeing, is a practice. Over time, your healers can become some of the most important people in your life.

So it's worth choosing them carefully.

What we hold dear

These are the things we return to again and again at Mindful Wellness Space, as we work to meet you on your path:

Listening to your senses and your intuition, and holding the bigger picture of whole-person healing.

Functional medicine and hormone testing for data. Muscle testing for precision. Chiropractic adjustments for structural alignment and/or nervous system regulation. This is where Dr. Kirsten West, DC, MS, begins with most people.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture with Pomaikaikealoha (Pomai) Nakoa, L.Ac., to support the body's own capacity to rebalance.

Mindfulness meditation with Emily Horn, CMT-P, to support the practice of being healthy. Because how many times have you started and stopped a new routine? Training the mind and heart is how resilience gets built. It's how you stay on track, and how you begin to notice the patterns living underneath your symptoms.

All of it is aimed at one thing: creating a mindful wellness space. A place where you're held through the twisting, turning journey of a life with a clear feedback loop for health available to you.

Four questions to ask

Whether you end up here or somewhere else entirely, take these with you.

1. Do your healers listen? Really listen? Short appointments are great for tune-ups, and they work well as part of a larger plan. But somewhere in your care there needs to be time, space, and a genuine sense of care. You are not the same as the last person who sat in that chair. Your body, mind, and heart are alive — in some ways, like a garden. What's growing in your garden? What do you want to grow?

2. Do they integrate Western and holistic treatment? These two belong together. Functional medicine and blood work can be the bridge — real data that translates across both worlds, so your acupuncturist and your primary care doctor are looking at the same picture of you.

3. Do they make room for healing that isn't linear? Be a little cautious of anyone promising a straight line. Sometimes healing looks like four steps forward and six steps back. Sometimes feeling worse comes before feeling better. A good practitioner will tell you that in advance, so you don't read a hard week as failure.

4. Do they help you build your team? Healing is a team sport. Look for people who refer generously, coordinate willingly, and don't need to be your only answer.

If you're still searching at 3:00 a.m.

You don't have to figure this out alone, and you don't have to have the right words for what's happening in your body before you reach out.

Dr. West offers free 15-minute consultations, in person or by phone. Bring your questions. Bring your list. Tell her what you're looking for, and we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit — and if we're not, we'll help you think about who might be.
